I have always had long straight hair; you know the “good hair” people of color are always talking about. It simply comes from the different blood that runs through our veins. My grandmother was Native American, and African-American mixed, so I guess you can say I got it naturally...
Well anyway after about 11 years of getting my hair warm pressed to maintain its straightness, I realized I couldn’t stand all the grease that goes into pressing our hair, so I decided on my 20th Birthday I was going to lock my hair.
Definitely not realizing the process behind growing locs, I went to a hairdresser who was maintaining a friend of mine locks and she started my locs. She basically cut off 98% of my hair which was almost 4ft in length prior to locking, and the result was this squiggly looking wet mess, my father nearly died when I came home and showed of my new “Locs”...
He was totally beside himself; I had cut off all the hair I had been able to grow for 20 years. It took my hair about 7 to 8 months before it decided it would do right and loc.
And the process has been beautiful, from dying them; wrapping them, curling them, crimping them…I have now had my locs for 9 years, and guess what I have grown back that 4ft of hair, that I had to cut off initially, and my hair is healthier, and natural.
I love my locs!!
